Cut Cleaning Time With Appliance Protection

Sticky, greasy fingerprints are the bane of many a mom and dad’s existence. You cannot keep your children from touching the variety of appliances found in your home. The dishwasher, refrigerator, and oven all are conveniently placed at a child’s level. Yet, you can spend half an hour with window cleaner and a dust-free cloth to remove these troublesome spots only to have to turn around and do it again. This is no way to live.

A Change Is In The Air

Waxing your appliances is one way to help reduce your work. It sounds unusual, but it can cut your cleaning time in half. In fact, a specially formulated appliance cleaner with wax will help remove the sticky, oily stains and fingerprints that are currently on your appliances. It also works as a double agent by laying down an invisible layer of wax that will help prevent stains and marks from clinging to these glossy surfaces in the future.

How Does it Work?

With a swipe of the cloth, a cleaner and wax product helps remove troublesome stains, fingerprints, and marks from many surfaces. You can safely use it on appliances, countertops, wood cupboards, sinks, and even your kitchen fixtures. The special cleaner is also safe on marble, sealed wood, glass, enamel, ceramic tiles, stainless steel, and metal.

When using one of these cleaner and wax products, it is best if you start with a relatively clean surface. Tough stains like grape juice, wine, or tomato need to be removed before applying the wax coating in order to achieve the best results.

To use the cleaner and wax, you need to evenly spray a coating onto your appliance, countertop, or other surface. Make sure you have shaken the product thoroughly so that the components are well combined. Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth and then buff to a shine. Ideally, the product should contain a clear wax that protects your surface against stains in the future as well.

Typical Uses of an Appliance Cleaner and Wax

Many homeowners and even professional cleaners rave about the unique ability of a cleaner and wax to prevent grime on surfaces after the first use. One of the more popular uses of this gem is to clean glass shower doors. The invisible wax does not streak on the glass doors, but it does prevent future soap scum build up. For best results, you will want to start with doors that have had all soap scum removed before use.

On your countertops, not only will this type of product protect against stains, but it also helps fill in the troublesome scratches that trap dirt and dust. A thin coating of this wonderful product is all it takes.

Keep your kitchen and bathroom clean for months with this unique product. First time use may require a thorough cleaning in order to remove tough stains and soap scum, but after that, you will find that cleaning is a piece of cake!

What Do I Need For Homemade Hydroponics?

If you intend to build or purchase one of the many types of homemade hydroponics, you should consider very carefully what you really intend to grow because not many homemade hydroponics can be used effectively for any crop. If you are new in the agricultural business and don't know how to start you can always look for homemade hydroponics in a local store but I must warn you that I haven't seen a very cheap one yet. Let's have a closer look at what you really need to do in order to have a successful business.

What Do I Need For Homemade Hydroponics?

First of all you will need one tote that will work as the nutrients and mineral reservoir; then a water pump will be used for oxygenating the nutrients all the time. An upper container will be used to hold several other smaller plant containers, in the container's bottom two holes must be made and used in the following way: one hole will support the flood and drain, and the other one must placed for the overflow pipe. A short tube pipe must be taken from the water pump to the drain fitting, and the water pump must be connected to a clock. This is the basics of an effective homemade hydroponics. The pump must work four times a day about half an hour each time.

If you succeeded in putting together a functional homemade hydroponics then your job is half done, because the other essential part is to learn how to feed your plants, according to the type of crop you are growing certain nutrients and minerals are to be used to achieve a satisfying result.

One of the best ways to prevent failure is to acquire a Ph meter and an EC meter that will both help you in monitoring the amount of nutrients and minerals your system has. As it can be seen homemade hydroponics are not something very easily made, but with determination and a little effort, results will show.

The things you will need for homemade hydroponics

Building homemade hydroponics is neither impossible nor too expensive, you will just need two 32 liter plastic totes, an aquarium water and an air pump. You also need to buy some flood and drain fittings and finally some plastic tubings and a timer. Hydroponics has become quite a hobby for many researchers and the fact is that its importance is recognized even by NASA that use this technique in providing fresh vegetable and recycle air on the orbital space station. Good luck!

Bathroom Cleaning Tips

A trip down the cleaning aisle in your local supermarket can be confusing. There are scrubbing bubbles, foaming cleansers, bathroom, tub and tile cleaners, toilet cleaners, glass cleaners, mildew cleaners - - and that’s just a start. You could easily spend half the day just reading labels to find out which product is the best for every single job in your bathroom. There are a few things to keep in mind, however, when choosing cleaners for your bathroom in order to make the selection process a bit easier.

1. Chlorine and ammonia don’t mix. Or at least, they shouldn’t. When chlorine and ammonia get together, a chemical reaction releases harmful and potentially toxic fumes. This is important to know because ammonia and chlorine bleach are the two most common bases for many power-scrubbing bathroom cleaners. When you mix and match bathroom cleaners, you increase the likelihood of accidentally combining ammonia and chlorine. If possible, stick to either ammonia based cleaners or bleach based cleaners only and never combine the two.

One way to avoid the potential for mixing the two chemicals is to choose a multi-surface bathroom cleaner that you can use on multiple surfaces. If you can find one product that removes hard water scale, eliminates soap scum, and can be used on porcelain, Formica, glass and mirrors, tiles, and many other surfaces, you’ll eliminate a potential hazard and save money at the same time.

2. You can reduce the work of cleaning the tiled walls of your shower by applying a coat of car wax to them after they have been cleaned. Make sure you only wax the walls and not the floor of the tub, as the wax can make things awfully slippery. Glass and fiberglass are both porous, which makes them prone to staining from hard water. The car wax seals the pores, however, making them less prone to staining.

What Is An Adoptive Parents’ Profile?

One of the things you will need if you are looking at domestic adoption is probably going to be an adoptive parents’ profile. An adoptive parents profile usually includes a letter to the birth mother as well as a couple of photos of the family and perhaps some other information regarding the family. In this article we are going to look at these elements of an adoptive parents’ profile and how you can go about putting together a good adoptive parents’ profile.

Your counselor will probably help you put together your adoptive parents’ profile but generally this will include your “Dear Birthparent” letter, some photos, autobiographies of your family, as well as some other information documents. Before putting together your profile think about which photos you are going to include in the profile and why and also what you want to say about yourself in the letter and the autobiographies.

The first thing to remember when creating your adoptive parents’ profile is to always remain honest. One of the hardest things for a birth mother to do is to give her child up for adoption in most cases and so you need to be sensitive to this and try to help her by being as honest as possible with regards to your family. For more info see http://www.childadoptionguide.org/Adoption_Photo_Listing.html

When creating your adoptive parents’ profile think about what questions you would like answered if you were considering giving your child up for adoption and try to answer these questions for the birth mother. You may even think of questions which she has not thought of but which she would consider important in evaluating who she would like to raise her child.

Be sensitive to the needs of the birth mother and her feelings when creating your adoptive parents’ profile. We mentioned this before but this is a very emotional time for the birth mother in most cases and if you come across as harsh and judgmental then it will just make it even more difficult for her to give you her child. Show love and acceptance and then she will know that her child will also be loved and accepted by you.

You should also include a variety of photos showing your family (you, your spouse and any other children you may have) in different settings and of course, the more cheerful, loving and supportive these photos look the better for you. The photos you include in your adoptive parents’ profile should also give a sense of who you are, what you enjoy and what your family is like.

In conclusion, an adoptive parents profile is a collection of photos, information documents and a letter which enable the birth parent to choose the right adoptive family for their child. This profile should be made to give a true reflection of your family and it should be sensitive to the feelings of the birth parent and also include a number of photos which show what your family is like. By creating your adoptive parents’ profile in this manner you are giving the birthparent the best possible information you can in order to help them decide whether you are the people she wants to raise her child.

The Marriage Triangle

"There's one sad truth in life I've found while journeying east and west - the only folks we really wound are those we love the best. We flatter those we scarcely know, we please the fleeting guest, and deal full many a thoughtless blow to those who love us best." -- Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Think of your marriage as a triangle with lovers, friends, and partners as its sides. Love, then, is the force that binds the sides together, the key to richness and risk, danger and opportunity; and you are the guardian of the key. But, what happened? You used to be friends, knew what kind of reactions you were going to get from each other and how things would go. Your world wasn't always rosy; but the two of you could handle it. When things weren't going well, you talked about it. You worked it out; but lately both of you are tied up in knots. You are always on edge; and you could cut the tension with a knife. Any more, you don't even go through the motions of caring about each other's feelings or acting like you care what is being said. It's just one of those things; but if your friendship's going down the tube isn't anyone's fault, then nurturing your friendship wasn't anyone's responsibility.

Your partnership is a shared responsibility too and can go down the tube with your friendship; so what happened? You used to be great partners, would talk and decide together what was important, what your priorities were. You were always up-front with each other about what you thought about things and were open to the other's ideas and opinions. You didn't always agree but it worked.

If there were problems, you worked them out and didn't blame or accuse or threaten. You were a team, always found a solution you both could live with; but you were trying a little harder, gave a little more, and were more responsible than your partner. That wasn't fair and is why you quit trying. Oh well, it's just another one of those things, even though you know that when either of you gives up on your partnership, that is all she wrote, as they say.

It may be all she wrote for your being lovers as well. You know how it goes. It's just one of those things. Sure, it used to be magic. You and your lover each knew what the other wanted, how to scratch the itch, so to speak. Love making was passion at its best and most intense. You were considerate of each other's feelings, each other's needs. No one was in charge, no one gave more or got less. It wasn't that kind of thing anyway. It was magic and you took turns being the magician; but one thing lead to another and then to another and it was gone; but now you finally get it, even if a bit late. Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, love is in the heart of the one who is loved. That is why when you feel the magic slipping away, you need to concentrate more on being a better lover than on being loved better. Dinah Shore really was right when she said, "Trouble is part of your life, and if you don't share it, you don't give the person who loves you enough chance to love you enough."

How To Recognize An Abused Child?

How to recognize that a child is being abused at home or by somebody else? You come across many children in your neighborhood. Have you ever thought about the abuse a child may be getting? Most of us do not, because we do not look for signs that tell us that a child is abused. If we can do that, we can save a child's precious childhood. Let us talk about that.

If the child is undergoing physical torture, you may find the signs of that on child's body. The injuries may not be bandaged. Watch for a burn sign, or red marks of beating, or any other mark that tells you that the child has suffered them not while playing or by accident, but by deliberate torture. If needed, ask the child. He/she may not answer and hesitate. You may see the fear in his/her eye when you ask that question. You should be then sure that the child is getting abused.

If the child is looking afraid or watchful at all the times, it means that the child expects the cane to fall on him/her at anytime. Normally healthy children are carefree. But an abused child is not carefree. That child may be asked to get up from sleep and hit mercilessly by his/her parents for some fault that was so small that any normal person could ignore it as childish act. But parents/abusers do not feel like that. They believe that the child should be perfect and deserves to be disciplined whenever a small mistake is made.

This is a very sad world and some people are cruel beyond belief. Please look for psychological signs in a child that signal something wrong. Please report to the nearest police station, if you suspect that the child is being abused. By ignoring that we are partners in the crime. Would you like to be partner is the crime of child abuse? Please help the unfortunate abused children. Please protect them from vicious people.

Plumbing Connected To Water Heaters And How To Make It More Efficient

Here Are The Four Main Types Of Piping That Can Be Connected To A Water Heater

As far as a water heater is concerned, there are two types of pipes that can be installed on water heaters. Coppers and rust-resistant steels are the metallic types. PB and CPVC are the most predominant types of plastic pipes.

Plumbing Connections

When examining a water heater's plumbing pipes for trouble, look for any rusting at the threads on the hot and cold lines on top of the water heater. Also look at the T&P valve's plastic pipe, if it has one, for any wear and tear. Your T&P valve can be found on the side of the water heater and can be activated by lifting a small metal clip on top of it.

If you have copper plumbing, its best to use copper flex connectors on the hot and cold lines above the water heater. Attach plastic-lined nipple adapters to the hot and cold lines. The flex connectors can be screwed directly into the plastic-lined nipples themselves and also heat traps can be installed here to increase heating efficiency by a plumber. The hot water line may have a combination anode rod attached to it inside the water heater. The cold water line will have a dip tube attached to it inside the water heater. A curved dip tube is recommended and if it is installed, use a plastic-lined nipple on top of the cold water inlet. Three inches is the minimum length.

If you have steel plumbing, its best to use plastic-lined nipples connecting at the hot and cold ports on top of the water heater and two more plastic-lined nipples connecting into the wall. Use copper flex connectors to connect between the appropriate lines.

There are adapters which can be used to adapt between PB or CPVC to metal pipes. Long flex connectors may also attach to these adapters.

Insulated Plumbing

To increase the heat efficiency of your plumbing, install 3/4 inch insulation on your hot and cold lines on your water heater. Keep the insulation 3 inches away from the water itself. Be sure to get the right insulation for the right sized pipes. Both galvanized pipes and copper pipes aren't actually the same size even though they may both say they are 3/4 inches.

Don't insulate the metal tin draft diverter above a gas water heater. This is a duct way that performs the same function as a chimney's flue for your water heater. Don't cover fittings or unions on the plumbing either. You may need easy access for them later.

Whatever the insulation you decide to use, follow the instructions for installation. If you're not sure what to do still, buy some heavy duty gas wrap tape or plastic zip ties to hold the insulation in place.

Problems With Oversized Plumbing

If your installing new plumbing, be sure to use pipes that are no larger than what is necessary. Large pipes have larger surface area from which to lose heat from for heated water. Water can more easily sit inside the oversized pipes and freeze as well.

Fabulous Gifts for the Bridal Shower and Engagement Party

With weddings come gifts. Lots of them. Between the bridal shower, the engagement party, and the wedding itself, gifts are showered almost continuously on the happy couple so they can start their new life together.

Deciding what to give and when, however, can be a bit puzzling. Do you buy a registry gift for the bridal shower, or something more personal just for the bride? And what do you bring to the engagement party?

Don't worry. We've got all the answers, as well as some creative gift ideas you can mull over before you go out gift shopping.

First off, the Bridal Shower is a party thrown just for the bride. Talk to the person organizing the shower (most likely the Maid of Honor), and ask what kind of shower it's going to be. Many bridal showers revolve around a theme, and thus the gifts do as well. For example, if the couple is honeymooning in Aruba, the theme might be travel. You could buy her some new luggage for their trip, some luxurious beach towels, an exquisite beach tote, etc. Let your imagination go wild! You might also find out where they're staying, and purchase a gift certificate for them to have a nice dinner while they're on their trip.

If it is a small, personal shower you could get her something a bit more racy like some sexy lingerie, or even a new cozy bathrobe and slippers to make her feel comfortable.

You can, however, get a bit more creative in your gift and go outside the box. What about giving the bride a day at the spa to relax? With all the running around she's about to start doing, it will be well appreciated! You could also get her a gift certificate to a fine salon to get her hair and makeup done. This could be used for the wedding day itself, or just a treat to pamper herself.

An Engagement Party is thrown for the couple, and it is perfectly acceptable to buy registry gifts for this event. Chances are, however, they've already accumulated plenty of dishes and towels, so why not get creative in your gift giving?

With a bit of research you could find a restaurant that puts together picnic dinners. Buying them a complete picnic with basket, blanket, wine and dessert would make for a very fun day for the couple to spend together.

Or, find out what they like to do together. If the couple enjoys the outdoors, why not buy them a year pass to the local state park? If they enjoy ice-skating, why not purchase a year's pass to the local rink? If rock climbing is their thing, a pass to the local climbing gym would be a great gift.

If you're feeling fun, you should think games. Croquet, volleyball, basketball, or board games are all fun ideas for some creative gifts they certainly won't expect – and won't get from anyone else.

With a little creativity you can certainly break the mold of dishtowels and bathmats for a shower or engagement gift. Using your imagination and a little ‘out of the box' thinking will ensure you get the couple a gift that they will have fun with, and one that will be long remembered.

Complete your own custom kitchen accessory projects. Built-in wine racks above refrigerators, mouldings to disguise soffets, and matching appliance, garages are popular kitchen accessories that add quick-access storage, or, a cabinetry display, plate rack, or bookshelf. These projects are not beyond the reach of the average woodworker or handyman or woman and can be accomplished with basic skills and tools. The possibilities are endless with today's line of hardware, woodworking and project supplies.

Bathroom accessories are similarly worked out for pleasure and beauty.

It's not polite to steal things from a luxury hotel's bathroom, but now people aren't snatching embroidered towels or miniature shampoo bottles.

Instead, consumers are taking the coordinated style associated with upscale hotels into their homes, which is one of the factors spurring the evolution of matching accessories in residential bathrooms.

Many plumbing fitting manufactures offer bathroom suites, so people can head to one company for faucets and accessories, grabbing hold of a complete, cohesive look. Matching products offer the one-stop shopping, contractors and their clients crave. "It provides convenience for the builder and consumer," say many designers.

As the role of accessories in the bath increases, so does the range of products. Builders and remodellers now can find so much more than just the basic towel bar, including glass shelves, hotel racks, light fixtures, tumblers, soap dishes, toilet paper holders, and even wall-mounted toilet bowl brushes made to match faucets.

"Every little place now that we can think to decorate, we definitely take advantage of," say many householders.

THE WIDER SELECTION

The wider selection of accessories gives customers a chance to personalise their baths. For example, using an oil-rubbed-bronze robe hook or a chrome wall-mounted toilet brush, homeowners can add individual flair without compromising the consistency of a look.

"You do not have to buy it exactly as you see it in a catalogue or showroom," say homeowners. "The days of everyone on the block having the exact same look are over." But a lot depends on the finishes available, and chrome and brushed nickel in accessories remain the most popular.

"I think that is mostly because when a homeowner goes and picks out, he goes for shine and effect." So, revamp that kitchen and bathroom and decide to make cooking and bathing a pleasure.

Small Kitchen Remodeling Ideas

Any remodeling idea for a small kitchen must address the following issues: counter space, storage, built-ins, and pantry.

In order to make better use of your kitchen floor space, you need to put up the maximum amount of counters. Plan your design with deeper counters to cover as much of the area not occupied with appliances with counter space if the difference in floor space is a matter of a few square feet.

Squeeze as many cabinets into your design as possible. Deep cabinets that can hold plates should be located near the dishwasher, and large cabinets with slide-out drawers should be placed near the oven.

Another space-saving device is to include built-in facilities. You can have built-in ovens, microwaves and storage for small appliances. This will make your kitchen appear less cluttered. Built-in storage for foods like potatoes and onions and bread storage cabinets will also give the kitchen a cleaner look. You can also opt for waist-high, sliding shelves that hold mixers and toasters. Your small appliances can remain hidden in these shelves and still be easily accessible.

If there is no room for a pantry in your kitchen, consider converting a closet outside the kitchen area to store your cutlery, pots and infrequently used items. You can also include rollout pantries that can be pulled out to view the items you have, but rolled back into a space.

Choose a large sink. It will be easier for you to clean bigger pots and pans. Moreover, a large sink is a great place to stash your dirty pots. A large sink can also serve as a utility sink, too.

You can increase the efficiency of your small kitchen by putting a wire basket on the inside the cabinet or under the sink to hold trash bags and other frequently used items. You can mount an instant hot water heater on the sink to replace the sprayer or soap.

A tile back splash on all the walls above the counters, stove and sink make the kitchen easier to clean.

Wallets: Perfect Pickings For Gift-givers

Imagine this if you can. In a year, the average male receives at least ten pairs of socks, a dozen handkerchiefs, a dozen shirts, and a dozen ties. Multiply these by the number of gift-giving occasions in a year, then increase the figures exponentially by the number of years your father, brother, or uncle has been receiving presents. What do you get? Socks, handkerchiefs, shirts, and ties so numerous they boggle the mind.

These figures defy comprehension. If you truly love someone, why would you want to bury them in a mountain of socks, handkerchiefs, shirts, and ties?

Giving presents to family members is always a challenge, particularly if you have to buy too many presents over such a short time. If you are on a budget and in a hurry, choose a gift type that you can give to just about anyone - brother, sister, father, mother, or even ex-wife. This way, you need not worry over what to give. All you have to do is pick different styles or colors of the same gift.

There are many types of wallets, among them:.

1. Money Clip Wallet
A money clip wallet is a hybrid between a money clip and a wallet. It combines the best of both worlds. It is as compact and organized as only money clips can be, and at the same time, as spacious as all wallets are.

The best thing about a money clip wallet is that it pushes people to rethink their traditional concept of wallets. Without side pockets or compartments, a money clip wallet is thinner and is much easier to bring everywhere. It forces you to get organized, too. A money clip wallet can only hold up to a certain stack of bills and three or four credit cards.

2. Bi-fold
These wallets are mainly for carrying credit cards in. If you value organization, you will most likely appreciate the compartmentalization that allows you to arrange your plastics. Bi-fold wallets are trendy and slim, and they never cause your pockets to bulge.

3. Tri-fold
These frequently have three zippered storage compartments, each one useful in keeping loose change in.

4. Zip-around
This is a big wallet with zipped enclosures on three of its sides. It has long and wide slots that make it perfect for storing documents in, on top of bills and credit cards. Additionally, it is made up of two storage compartments separated by zip-closures.

5. Chain Wallet
These are large wallets, often made of leather, which people carry inside their hip pockets and secure to their belts with the use of a chain. Especially popular among truck drivers and bikers, chain wallets are said to be the wallet of choice of people who are frequently on the road.

You can never go wrong with a wallet. A money clip wallet, or any wallet, will make a good generic present for several reasons. For one, wallets are always handy. For another, they come in all kinds of styles and colors. Finally, they are very affordable. Wallets, from money clip wallet to zip-around, will never go out of style. The day the world stops needing wallets is the day money ceases being functional.

Cleaning Soap and Scum: Tips and Tools for Minimizing Buildup

One of the most unpleasant cleaning chores can be cleaning soap and scum buildup. If the buildup is quite bad, the process of cleaning soap and scum take a few cleaning applications. However, there are some tips to preventing soap scum and some methods to remove it quickly and easily.

Soap scum and buildup develops from the ingredients in hard soaps (bars) and the dirt and minerals that are removed when showering and bathing. Soap is made from sodium or potassium fatty acids and created through a process called saponification. The result is an emulsifying substance that can separate dirt and oil in water so that these can be removed from items such as clothing. One problem with soap is that they can be converted into fatty acids that form soap scum. This is a particular problem with hard water. The mineral talc is also used in soaps. The talc helps the minerals adhere to the shower, and before you know it, a buildup of soap scum develops, and cleaning soap and scum is required.

For cleaning soap and scum, a commercial product specifically designed for this purpose is recommended. These products are chemically designed to clean the components of soap scum. For built up soap scum, it may be necessary to repeat the process a few times. For cleaning soap and scum, the product must "sit" on the problem area. This works fine for the edges of a bathtub, for example, but can create a problem on walls. As such, a foaming product is best, as the foam will stay on the problem area longer than a liquid. Follow the directions on the label for how long to keep the soap scum remover on the problem area. All types of dried on soap scum will require the use of a sponge or brush to remove. The extra friction helps remove the buildup. If the dried on soap scum is thick, a stiff-bristled brush may be necessary for thoroughly cleaning soap and scum. If the soap scum buildup is on a flat surface, a razor blade is also very effective--and more dangerous, of course, so exercise caution when using this tool. For lesser buildup, a standard sponge with a scouring side and soft side should do the trick for cleaning soap and scum that is not thick.

After removing dried on soap scum with a soap scum remover, regular maintenance and prevention is key. When shopping for products for cleaning soap and scum, look for a product that includes some type of barrier protection. These create a wax-like barrier on your tub and shower wall that helps prevent soap scum from adhering to the surface. Although everyone is busy these days, a quick, two-step process can help prevent the build-up of dried on soap scum and will save time later when you are doing other things rather than cleaning soap and scum! First, after every shower or bath, use a squeegee or cloth to remove soap residue. Follow this by spraying the shower and tub with a product for cleaning soap and scum. Avoid spraying the bottom of the tub as this can make it very slippery. This daily routine will save a lot of time later. Cleaning soap and scum in this manner prevents the long-term buildup that can take hours to clean. If you are cleaning your tub and shower in this manner on a daily basis, a weekly, thorough clean with a soap scum remover should keep the problem in check.

Are you moving your home?

The mere mention of shifting house makes Kavita jittery. She cannot forget her traumatic experience few years ago. She had to move in a house which was still under the process of renovation. Haphazard work and disorganised packing left her feeling weak and depressed for months. In the process she also lost many important documents.

Moving house can be very tiring, and is a drain on your physical and mental reserves. But with a little bit of planning and effort we can avoid the nightmare Kavita went through.

Start early

Make a list the moment your shifting date is finalized. This can be your chance to cut through the clutter you have accumulated through the years.

Make 3 sections on the list: "Will Need", "Don't Need" and, "May Kept". Start removing the "Don't Need" things. Don't pile old stuff you want to sell in your new house. Old clothes and children's books can be donated.

Turn some "Don't Need" stuff into "Will Need" things. Cut out used curtains/old bed sheets into dusting/mopping clothes. Add borders or lace to give them a new look.

Next, carve out a space where you start putting you "Can Be Kept" things in marked cartons. Remove excess stuff from kitchen like bowls, spoons, glasses and pack them away. Open these boxes in your new house when you really need them.

Keep those books that add vale to your shelf. Donate the rest to the library. There is no point keeping books you have read when they can give joy to someone who hasn't.

Notify people

Now prepare a list of people who have to be notified about your new address.

Some important forget-them-nots are:

* Bank
* Gas Cylinder
* Insurance companies
* Schools
* Office
* Wherever you have invested: Companies, post office, etc.
* Vehicle registration
* Voter's ID

Most of these would require new address proof. You can get your new address attested in some cases for verification.

You have to terminate certain services and start with new ones in your new home. But first find out if you can continue with them at your new address.

These might include:

* Electricity
* Telephone
* Cable Operators
* Milk delivery
* Newspaper delivery
* Subscriptions

Pack them away

If you have hired professional packers, you don't need to worry about cartons and tapes. But if you have to DIY (Do It Yourself), start planning ahead.

Your first cartons should be full of items that are least used. Showpieces, spare bed sheets, blankets and spare towels are some things that can be stowed away.

Gather all the important documents in one place. Cover with plastic sheets so they don't get wet in accidental leakages while shifting. Make a list of all documents that you have packed.

When there's only a month to go before leaving, pick out few dresses and some night ware. Pack the rest. Make sure the clothes have been aired properly before packing.

For the last few days, make do with only a few pieces of furniture. You can also use floor mattresses and bean bags or stools. Clean rest of the furniture and cover them with sheets. Get all the electrical fittings (including air conditioners) done in advance.

Empty your kitchen towards the end. Remove perishables from refrigerators. Switch it off and clean it thoroughly. If possible, order food the last 2 days before shifting.

Don't forget!

* Get all sizes of cartons, and don't worry about getting a number of small cartons. More small cartons are preferable to fewer heavy boxes.

* Bubble-wrap fragile things. Use your pillows to line and cushion these boxes.

* All poisonous, flammable and perishable things should have their own separate cartons.

* Each room should have its own set of boxes. You can add a stroke of paint brush to help you distinguish them from other boxes.

* Label all the cartons with individual items they carry.

Fabulous Gifts for the Bride

There are few things in life more wonderful than getting married. It just gives a good feeling to see two people in love starting out together, doesn't it?

Buying gifts for the wedding or engagement party is almost as fun as buying gifts for yourself, but wedding gifts don't have to break the bank. In fact, it's usually cheaper to buy the couple a something for their new home rather than giving them cash. So, if you want some great gift ideas (because the thought of giving them a toaster just makes you cringe …), read on. We've got some great ones.

For a Creative Gift

Well, that high-priced photographer is going to produce mounds of photographs, all of which will need a home. A photo album or funky, artistic frame is always a good choice for a wedding gift.

Or, why not think about getting the happy couple something to do together in their leisure time? Perhaps a picnic basket and set of picnic supplies, a doublewide hammock, or an exquisite wine gift basket.

For a Healthy Gift

If the newly married couple is into healthy or organic living, why not put together a gardening kit for them? Find some organic vegetable or flower seeds, and collect all the tools they'll need to garden together in the backyard.

You could also think about ordering them a gift basket full of organic foods. With all the stress of planning and pulling off a wedding, it might be nice to just relax one night and munch on some organic, tasty treats!

For Pure Decadence

Decadent gifts can be anything from the pure luxurious to the downright fun. With all the blenders and plates the couple is going to be getting, why not lighten things up and get them a basket full of games? Stock it up with things they can play together, everything from a deck of cards to Monopoly.

If you're thinking luxurious, well the sky is only limited by your imagination! What about a digital photo frame? One of these will allow them to upload all their wedding pictures. The screen changes every few seconds, so they always get to look at a new picture.

For the Time Honored Gift

What about an expensive journal and pen to record their wedding experience in? It would definitely be an adventure to look back on 10 years from now and read about how Aunt Marge got drunk at the reception and lead the conga line for over an hour!

Or, what about some personalized stationary to write thank you notes on?

For a Technology Gift

If you're thinking luxurious and techie, why not purchase a new home theater system? There's almost nothing better than curling up to a good movie with theater surround-sound (although it might be hard to resist keeping this one for yourself …).

If that's a little out of budget, what about nice photo printer to print all their wedding pictures out on? If you're feeling a bit on the luxurious side, you can also stock them up on ink refills as well.

With a little advance planning and creativity, you can go above and beyond the toaster and blender cliché of wedding gifts. You'll give a gift that's unexpected, appreciated, and certainly memorable!

Terrific Teacher Gifts

Your child's teacher is one of the most important people in his or her life on a day-to-day basis. If you stop to think about it, kids spend 5 full days per week with this person, learning extremely valuable life skills and knowledge. Showing teachers that you appreciate their efforts with your children is a wonderful thing to do. But how do you pick a gift that conveys this appreciation?

Buying a gift for a virtual stranger can be tricky. One tip is to get your kids involved! Not only will the gift be more personal if they help pick it out, but the fact of the matter is that they do spend more time with this person than you do. They just might know better what he or she will like!

You can also try to get other parents involved. If you can get a few others to chip in $10 or $20, you'll be able to buy a really nice gift rather than something small. If you're able to pool money, you could think about buying a weekend getaway to a local B & B, a nice piece of jewelry, or even a luxurious down or cashmere-like blanket for them to wrap up with on cold nights!

• For a Creative Gift. Teachers love their students, so getting something your child can help pick out would really hit home. You could think about a charm bracelet and let your child pick out some charms to go with it. Even a thank-you card your child makes herself would really make the teacher feel appreciated.

• For a Healthy Gift. Give your child's teacher a night of relaxation. You could put together a movie-night themed gift, like a ceramic popcorn bowl, some gourmet popcorn, and a movie you think he would like.

Or think about getting her a gift certificate for a massage or other spa service. An afternoon of pampering would be much appreciated!

• For Pure Decadence. Consider buying the teacher a lavish gift certificate to the local teacher supply store. Wouldn't she be thrilled to go buy classroom supplies to her heart's content? You also might purchase a bunch of new books for the classroom's reading corner.

If you'd rather get something for the teacher herself, take the lead from your child. Find out what she enjoys doing in her off time. If she enjoys golf, get her a round on the local course. If he enjoys art, get him some high-class art supplies or a one year's pass to the local art museum.

• For the Time Honored Gift. This one might take some coordination (if there's a teacher's assistant, she might be well-placed to help you in this), but it's well worth the effort. If you can get the whole class involved, have everyone write a short letter to the teacher that explains why they love her or him so much. You can then take all the letters and put them in a beautiful photo album with pictures of all the kids. It will be a keepsake they'll never get rid of!

• For a Technology Gift. There are a million different choices here, both for use in the classroom and outside school. You could purchase an educational set of DVD's that he or she might have had her eye on for a while, or a new cd player for the classroom. Think music as a background for creative writing and put some tunes on a cd for the teacher.

The key to getting a great gift for your child's teacher is to not wait until the last minute to start thinking about it! While the decorated coffee mugs and apple-themed gifts are appreciated, it's also nice to get something unique (and special) once in a while.

Unique Bridal Shower Ideas

The story of the origin of the bridal shower is very interesting. As the story goes, once upon a time a rich girl wanted to marry a poor man. The father of the bride refused to provide the dowry to set up their home. Therefore, the friends of the girl decided to come together and "shower" the couple with gifts for their new life. Usually the Maid of Honor with the help of the other bridesmaids organizes the bridal shower. Earlier the bridesmaids and other females in the bride's life used to get together and reminisce.

Now days usually the couples get together for a great party.

A bridal shower can be based on many themes. A theme provides direction to a party. The invites, décor, favors, gifts and food all reflect the theme. Here are a few themes for a bridal shower.

Remembrance :
Each guest brings some token of remembrance that kindles old memories. Popular choices would be a photo, card or a letter that will describe the event. These can then be put together in an album. The invite can be pretty and elegant with lots of flowers. Make collages of the photos of the bride and groom. Make posters of any special achievements of the bride and groom. You can also display pictures of childhood heroes. For the centerpiece, put pictures of the bride and the groom as kids in ornate frames. The party favor can be glass frame coasters having the pictures of the bride and the groom and a thank you note.

Baskets :
In this theme, the guest brings baskets full of gifts. You can assign them a specific genre when they RSVP. E.g. kitchen utility items, picnic basket or hobby basket. The invitation can have a picture of a basket full of goodies. The décor will have loads of baskets. The centerpiece for the tables can be a basket full of flowers. Arrange snacks in baskets around the room. Place a big basket near the bride to keep the gifts. The party favors can be small baskets, filled with chocolates, and packed daintily.

Wine and Cheese :
Each guest brings two bottles of wine. Keep a wine rack handy. One bottle is the gift for the bride and goes in this rack. The second can be used for tasting by the guests. Cheese and crackers are always a popular choice to go with it. For the finger food and dips and spreads it's best to set a seperate table aside. On the invite, put pictures of wine glasses, candles and hearts.
For the centerpiece, put two wine glasses filled with water having flowers floating in them. The room can be decorated with artificial grapes, posters of vineyard and interesting empty wine bottles. You can gift good cheese, packed in a wine bottle shaped container as party favors.

Hawaii :
This is a very exciting theme for fun loving people. It should be arranged at the beach or by the pool. The guest should be asked to bring beachwear. The invite will have the printed details encircled by a huge lei garland. Each guest on arrival gets a lei garland to wear. The décor will have green streamers and abundant flowers. Put inflatable, paper or potted palms around. Put a hula skirt around the table. Let the centerpiece be colorful paper parrot. If you can arrange a few hula dancers, nothing like it. Tropical drinks and matching seafood salads are served. Party favors can be a pack of tea lights in shell motifs.

Garden :
This theme is great for the nature lovers. A spot in the garden would be ideal. If that is not possible, bring a little of the garden in the room with potted plants and flowers. The invitation can depict a potted plant with a single flower painted on it. Gift ideeas here would include garden tools and supplies. Have food with lots of herbs and greens. Put posies of flowers tied with ribbons on the walls. The centerpiece can be a live potted plant. The whimsical party favor will be flower seeds in a prettily decorated packet tied with a ribbon.

Mother's Day Can Be Marvelous! Great Gift Ideas for Mom

So you don't want to do flowers this year. You want something really unique, something that will really show how much you appreciate her.

Something great … but what?

Buying gifts for Moms are, admittedly, easier than buying for Dads most of the time, but finding that perfect gift (the one that will make her face light up as if she were 5 again) does take some time. We know you're busy, so we've taken some of the legwork out of the process. Here's a list of great gift ideas you can consider for Mother's Day.

• For the Artistic Type. What about a portable art studio? If she loves watercolors, you put together a set she can take out anywhere. Easel, supplies, it's all in one handy case that she can sling on her back and hit the road. You can also stock it with oils or drawing pencils if those are her cup of tea.

Or, if you'd like to surprise her with something completely new, why not put together a gift basket revolving around, say, candle-making? Or calligraphy? Trying something new is always fun and exciting, and it might even be something you can try together.

• For the Health Nut. If your mom loves exercise and well-being, why not put together gifts that cater to that? You could buy her an exquisite indoor water fountain for soothing background noise. There are many made of copper that look like works of art, and all come in sizes from the very small to the very large.

Meditating machines also create soothing background noises like birds chirping, rushing mountain streams, or the surf. These are great for cutting out unwanted background noise, and can be very relaxing to listen to while reading or doing yoga.

• For Pure Decadence. Everyone loves getting stuff in the mail, especially on a regular basis. Why not think about getting her a regularly delivered gift? You can do flowers every month, cakes, cookies, fruit, chocolate – the possibilities are endless. It's like getting a new present every few weeks!

• For the Time Honored Gift. This category is great for anything personalized. Paperweights, photo albums, watches and jewelry, and even art, personalizing is a great way to give a gift that will be honored and kept forever.

If you'd like to get a bit more creative, you could also write a letter to your mom to go along with a personalized gift. Recount some fond memories you've had with her, and let her know why she's so special to you.

• For a Technology Gift. If your mom loves music and does not already have an iPod, this makes a really wonderful gift. They're lightweight and hold an amazing number of songs. If you know her musical taste, you could load some of her favorite tunes on there before giving it to her so she could start enjoying it immediately!

If she does already have one, why not get her an iTunes gift card or some accessories to go with it? Perhaps a nice set of headphones (those earbuds that come with it start to hurt after awhile), or a portable boom box she can slip her iPod into and take outside.

Or why not think about putting together a gift basket full of DVD's revolving around a theme? For example, if your mom is from the South, why not pick out a bunch of movies with a Southern Girl theme (think ‘Steel Magnolia's' here …) or, if she loves action flicks, get her a bunch of action movies she can curl up on a Friday night and watch. You could also add to this theme and throw in a fancy popcorn bowl, some gourmet popcorn, a cozy blanket, anything she might want for a movie-watching marathon.

Giving great gifts is like an art form, and with a little creativity you can put together gifts that will never be forgotten!

Keep Your Relationship Romantic

Rediscover the early months of any relationship where everything is wonderful and the entire first year or two can be a walk in the park .But sooner or later, the romance and warm fuzzies that you had at the beginning fade away and are replaced by cold, hard life.

First of all, there is no romance if you can't have communication. It doesn't have to be verbal, just a simple loving glance or a kiss goodbye will suffice. In many cases, even simple gestures like these have vanished from long-term relationships. Smiling at your spouse in the morning over coffee will do wonders. So will kissing him or her goodbye or even leave a short love note in one' briefcase.

Love takes effort and so does romance. You can boost your romantic level by simply saying "I love you", words that probably slipped out of your mouth frequently in bygone eras! Try to make it a habit to tell your partner that you love them a minimum of three times a day. It's not hard at all. Just once afte ryou have woken up, when you meet after work and finally before you go to bed. If you can throw those three valuable words in there at other times of the day as well, go for it! We all need to hear that we are loved.

Avoid fighting in your free time. Finding time alone can be very hard, especially if you have children, so don't ruin it by bringing up problems you have with the other person. If you are annoyed that your husband left his shoes in the middle of the hall for the umpteenth time, wait until he is about to do it again to remind him gently where they actually belong. And if your wife prepares that mushroom dish that you hate so much, don't comment on it while you are having a date night! Spending this time talking about more constructive things will greatly help your relationship.

Have some cuddle time. Sometimes just being on the couch together can do wonders for boosting the romantic connectio.

Take a vacation. Most of the time a weekend off from work and the kids will do;it doesn't have to be a romantic second honeymoon to Hawaii or Fiji. Find a cozy Bed and Breakfast out of town and relax . . . together. Both of you will benefit from the downtime and this will reflect in your everyday actions toward each other.

TLC is highly under-rated. Why shouldn't you kiss or hold hands in public, or in front of your kids? You are not only proving your love to each other, but to the world. And while you certainly don't want to start undressing each other in front of the kids, they will learn positive things from seeing that their parents are still in love!

Romance takes some effort and upkeep. If you ignore it or put it on the back burner, you will most certainly lose it, so take up the challenge and do something today to rekindle the romance in your relationship.

Things to do for Easter

Introduction.
The period of Easter is a particularly joyous one in most parts of the Northern Hemisphere. This time of year usually marks the end of the dreary winter, with the budding of new flora, and emergence of fauna from their hibernation. Man is not left out of this sense of renewal. Men, women and children change their outdoor clothes, from the heavy suffocating wool to the lighter linen and cotton. Easter is that time of year when children stream out of the front door squealing, squalling and running round the garden. The more enterprising ones among them bring out their bicycles and pedal down the street, calling on their neighborhood friends to come out and play.

Preparation for Easter
One of the novel traditions of Easter in the West, apart from the religious ceremonies that attend this period, is the Easter egg Hunt. A few days before Eater day, there is a general cleaning out of both the home and the barn. Piles of disused furniture and equipment, used clothes and rags, are brought out to be sent to the incinerators. The house frontage and garden are given a face lift. Dead leaves flowers and twigs which had survived winter are raked, pilled up and burned. Inside the home, shuttered windows are opened to let in fresh air. The living room really comes alive. The floor is vacuumed clean, the chairs tables and other furniture given a shine and polish.

Special Meals for Easter
The kitchen takes on a life of its own. Special meals are usually prepared for Easter day. In most countries of Europe and North America a major component of any special Easter meal is the ubiquitous chicken egg. In traditional Christian homes, the previous forty days before Easter had been a period of deprivation and austerity in protein consumption. The period of Lent is usually one of fasting with the conspicuous absence of animal protein like beef in the meals served during the Lenten forty days. Maybe to make up for the shortfall in protein intake, while at the same time avoiding any food containing blood, the bloodless chicken egg comes in handy. All kinds of menus containing eggs are presented on the dining table.

Easter egg Hunts.
The Easter egg is a dyed or decorated egg, traditionally associated with Easter. The decorated Easter egg first started as a simple art of just painting a boiled chicken egg with red color. The preparation of the Easter egg has gone through a lot of metamorphoses to now include an elaborate process, which include embedding of sweets into egg shaped candy. Easter egg hunts have become a major part of Eater Monday celebrations in North America, Europe and some far-flung places like Australia and New Zealand. The British, who colonized these last two places as outposts of their now moribund empire, took their tradition along with them.

The Easter egg hunt is one such tradition. On Easter evening the lady of the house, prepares her brightly colored eggs a few days to Easter, or maybe just got them off the shelf in a grocery store. She then packages them in foil or other suitable wrappers. Off to the garden she goes to hide them in some shrubs or under her rose bushes, while her kids are asleep. The following morning the children of the house and their invited friends go in search of the precious eggs. The more you find, the more you eat or keep.

How To Make Time For The Ones You Love

Imagine if you will the life of Suzy - the busy, married mother of two wonderful children. She works a full time job, both inside and outside of the house; she is busy trying to be a devoted daughter and sister to her parents and siblings. Suzy is somehow managing to keep her head above water. The house stays fairly clean, the kids get their homework done, and she and her husband are doing ok. However she just can't avoid the feeling that something is missing. Suzy doesn't remember the last time she did something just for fun with her kids or her husband. Each day feels like the same routine and experiencing bonding or important moments with her loved ones is rare.

All the way across town, Ron is getting ready for his day. He owns his own small business and being the boss cuts down on his free time a lot. His friends and family constantly complain that they never see him or get to talk to him for more than a few minutes at a time. While Ron loves what he does for a living, it is starting to seem as if work is all he does. He wants the opportunity to spend time on his hobbies and relax with his loved ones, but there aren't enough hours in the day.

These two people have widely different lives. The one thing they do have in common, however, it not having enough time to spend with their loved ones. Many times in our lives we struggle with making all of our obligations and responsibilities fit into our schedules. The result is that our loved ones lose out on valuable and important time with us. At the same time, we, too, are losing out on the affection and rewards of being part of a family larger than ourselves.

The best laid plans often go wrong. For this reason, it would be incredibly helpful for you to consider using Feng Shui to decorate your home and give yourself more time to spend with those you love. The process isn't difficult and many people who experience Feng Shui for the first time are amazed at how much it improves every aspect of their lives. This ancient Oriental philosophy is centered on the idea of creating a space that enables positive energies to flow around your home. Any obstacle or impediment of this process creates an imbalanced atmosphere. If finding more time to enjoy and bond with your loved ones is important to you, here's your chance to make a positive step in the right direction.

The first rule in any Feng Shui changes is to eliminate clutter throughout the house. Completely and thoroughly clean and organize every nook and cranny of your home. Get rid of items you don't use and find a home for everything you are keeping. Don't forget about cabinet space and closets. Once this is done, you have a clean canvas to work your Feng Shui magic on.

In order to create a relaxed atmosphere that promotes time spent among those you love, look at your lighting. Excessively bright light is often too stimulating. You will feel the need to be at constant work with such bright light in your home. Change all of the light bulbs in the house to a lower wattage. The balance and relaxation allowed by the dimmer lights will help you to focus on the softer side of life and that includes the love and devotion of your family.

Water is an important element in Feng Shui. The sound of gently flowing water is essential in helping you and your family find the relaxed state you need to concentrate on each other and thrive in the family unit. In the living or family room, or whichever room the family spends the most time in, add a small water fountain. The sound of running water alone will encourage relaxation and focus on each other. In Feng Shui, it also helps to relieve the stresses of the day and wash away any nagging worries or concerns you may have related to work.

Things that are beautiful are very helpful in promoting stress relief and focus. In order to lift yourself spiritually to a higher plane, put a shelf up in the corner of your bedroom. Then pick a pretty vase or small piece of artwork on the shelf. Seeing something you enjoy placed higher than eye level will assist you in making the transition from work to home and enable the positive energies to properly flow.

It may not seem like its possible for something like Feng Shui to be able to help you find more time to enjoy your family and friends, but when the good chi is encouraged to flow, it can make a tremendous difference in how the whole family interacts and learns from each other. Just a few small changes make a huge difference.

Helping Your Teen Find A Summer Job

Summer break for most students is not too far away. In fact, many teens will be looking for a way to earn extra cash. As a parent, there are things you can do to help your teen find summer work.

Thinking back to when we were teens, it was a given that summers would be devoted to finding a job to help with family finances. Today, the same holds true for some teens, while others simply want to find a way to earn additional cash for expenses they may incur over the summer.

Having a job as a teen is important in that it teaches responsibility at an early age, but more importantly, prepares them for when they become full-time members of the work force. More importantly, developing a worth ethic can be immeasurable. Along with learning to work along with others, understanding what is expected of them, and given the opportunity to work in different types of businesses can make all the difference in ascertaining their field of endeavor.

In order to help your teen find a summer job, perhaps the place you work in may need someone to help with filing or other office duties; or if your teen is pursuing a specific area of interest you can contact many companies in that particular field who are seeking interns; you can ask your teen’s counselor if there are any corporations who are hiring teens as part of a school-wide program; contact local department stores, small boutiques, or stores within malls who need assistance during the summer. You can also contact your local state and city government to determine what summer jobs they have available. In fact, some of these jobs may be out door related, which your teen may find more suitable.

As a parent, you can also contact your friends and family members who may need additional help in their respective companies. In addition, there are plenty of jobs offered at summer camps where your teen can apply for a position as a counselor.

For a teen, working a summer job brings a certain amount of experience they could not obtain anywhere else. Understanding how specific businesses operate, the ability to take orders, and establishing a foothold in one area or another gives them the opportunity to decide what field of endeavor they may want to pursue in college.

As parents, we want the very best for our teens. Helping them to find a summer job is the first step on their path to learning the rules of the game. Moreover, the benefits are invaluable in helping them think about their career choices. The more teens are exposed to, and become part of, the work force – the easier the transition will be when they graduate from college.

How to Remove Stains from Your Toilet Bowl

Does your toilet bowl have nasty brownish or yellow rings around it? Stains running from beneath the rim to the water level? A brownish rust stain in the bottom? All of these stains are caused by a buildup of minerals from hard water. Because porcelain is porous, it’s especially prone to picking up these nasty stains and holding onto them forever.

Don’t despair if this sounds familiar to you. There is a way to eliminate these problems and to keep them from coming back. By following these simple cleaning tips, your toilet will look great once again:

• Turn off the water to your toilet.

• Flush it repeatedly until the bowl is empty of water.

• Get some heavy duty paper towels and soak them with an all purpose bathroom cleaner or orange citrus cleaner. You can also use white vinegar.

• Line the toilet bowl with the paper towels. Let them sit there.

• Keep the paper towels wet for several hours by adding more citrus cleaner as it dries out.

• When the water spots start dissolving, get out your stiff bristled toilet brush and scrub to remove the scale. A toilet brush with a bent tip will make the job easier by getting up under the rim and into the trap to get at the source of the stains.

• Turn the water back on and rinse thoroughly.

• If the treatment didn’t completely dissolve the stains, buy a pumice stone at a janitorial supply store or a hardware store.

• Wet one end of the pumice stone. Keep it wet while you work. Rub the pumice stone across the stains very, very gently.

• Switch to the nylon bent tip toilet brush again to scrub away the remains of the stain.

• Maintain the cleanliness of the toilet by giving it a daily quick scrubbing with the toilet brush. While you’re at it, scrub up under the rim to remove hard water and lime deposits that will drip down the insides of your toilet. Remember to rinse the brush well and to hang it to dry when you’re done.

You can remove lime scale and alkaline deposits from your bathroom sink using the same method. Just soak paper towels in citrus cleaner or vinegar and line the bowl of the sink with them. Then, keep the towels wet with the solution for several hours. After this time has passed, scrub the stains with a nylon bristle toothbrush or cleaning brush and then rinse with clear water. Voila! A sparkling clean sink to match your perfectly clean toilet..

Creating Stained Glass Panels

Used in cathedrals to show glorious scenes of saints, and for animals and plants in other venues stained glass panels are beautiful works of art. Though complex looking, these stained glass windows are actually fairly simple, and with a little effort anyone can recreate the art.

The biggest concern when creating stained glass panels is of course safety. The art you are creating includes exposed glass edges, a hot soldering iron, chemicals, and power tools. If you keep safety in mind and maintain a well-organized workspace your hobby will be perfectly safe. As with most crafts you will need to acquire some tools and materials before you begin. You will need glass cutters to score the glass for breaking. As with most tools the higher quality cutter will cost more to purchase, but can make the difference between success and accidental breakage. Another glass specific tool you will need is a pair of combination breaker-grozer pliers. A glass grinder will be needed for making adjustments to glass edges after breaking. Mastering this tool can help your pieces fit together more precise, increasing your appearance quality. More material and tools will be introduced to you as we begin to construct a stained glass panel.

To get started grab the sheet of glass you will be working on with one hand holding the top edge and the other holding the bottom with the sheet in a vertical position. Never carry a sheet of glass in the horizontal position to avoid cracks and breakage! To place the glass on your workbench while vertical place the center of the sheet against the bench edge. Then roll the glass onto the table and slide completely onto the bench surface.

For your first project choose a novice pattern with a simple design and relatively short lines to score. You will need two copies of your pattern so trace the original pattern onto a sheet of standard paper and heavy pattern paper with a sheet of carbon. Assign numbers to each piece as a way of keeping track of your pieces as you create and build the project. Then use special glass pattern shears to cut your pattern out of the heavy paper.

Select one piece of your pattern and trace the shape onto your glass using a glass-marking pen. Do not forget to mark on the glass the number assigned to that piece of the pattern. Then you need to score the lines you traced onto the glass. Apply firm constant pressure with your glass-cutting tool and make one smooth cut along your line. After you score the line you will need to break the score. Some crafters opt to do this step by hand, while others use breaker-grozer pliers for the job. Either way apply a quick even pressure while doing the break to keep it as clean as possible. Continue to mark, score, and break until all the pieces of your project are created.

Starting in one corner of your project, next compare the glass piece you cut out with that piece in the uncut pattern. Mark any glass that crosses over the pattern lines and then use a grinder to remove the excess glass. Continue to do this to each piece until all pieces are the same as the pattern then place them within the assembly jig for the project.

For the foil wrapping step you need to ensure your hands and the glass are clean to ensure the tapes sticks correctly. Apply the foil wrap tape onto the glass edge with exactly the length of overhang on each side and work your way around the glass edge completely. Overlap the tape on the end about ¼” then crimp the foil over the glass edges. Complete this step by burnishing the foil smooth and then place the glass piece back into the jig.

The final step of your stained glass panel project will be to solder all joints together. Slowly move the hot soldering iron over all the seams coating the foil in solder. Once the initial side is complete roll the project over and solder the seams from the other side. Once you have all the seams covered in solder you should clean your project with a soft rag and glass cleaner. After cleaning the stained glass panel is ready to be proudly displayed for all to enjoy. When others comment on the beauty of the panel you can smile and say you did it all yourself!

Creating stained glass panels is a very fun and rewarding hobby, which can also become a little extra income if you are so inclined. There is so much to learn with stained glass, please take the time to seek out more learning resources than just a small article. To learn techniques and skills to improve your skill look into local classes and workshops. Also speak with artisans in your area, most are more than willing to pass on pointers to a fellow glass worker.

Breast Feeding Your Baby

By: Cecilia Koh , Posted On: 2007-04-26

Reasons for choosing breast feeding
1. It is the natural physiological way to feed a baby
2. Human breast milk is made for human babies
3. The components - lactose, protein (whey and casein), and fat - are easily digested by a newborn's immature system so breastfed babies have fewer incidences of diarrhea or constipation
4. Breast milk is always fresh and readily available
5. Breast milk is always the right temperature
6. It protect baby against allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity and SIDS
7. The skin-to-skin contact can enhance the emotional connection between mother and infant thereby increasing the bonding process
8. No need to spend money on bottle feeding equipment and expensive milk formula

Advantages

Antibodies - a nursing mother passes antibodies to her baby to protect or lower the occurrence of many conditions such as ear infections, diarrhea, respiratory infections and meningitis. Breast milk contains new antibodies whenever the mother is exposed to new infections. Antibodies cannot be added to formula milk

Prevent obesity - Recent studies show that breastfeeding might help prevent childhood and adult obesity. According to the National Women's Health Information Center (part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), babies who are breastfed tend to gain less unnecessary weight, which may help them be less overweight later

Higher IQ - Also recent studies suggest that children who were exclusively breastfed for 6 months have IQs 5 to 10 points higher than children who were formula fed.

Reduces cancer risk - In addition, studies show that breastfeeding helps lower the risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer and also may help decrease the risk of uterine and ovarian cancer

Natural weight loss - A nursing mother will need extra 500 calories per day to produce breast milk but breastfeeding also burns calories and helps shrink the uterus, so nursing mothers are able to return to their pre-pregnancy shape and weight quicker. Eating a wide variety of well-balanced foods introduces breastfed babies to different tastes through the breast milk which will have different flavors depending on what their mothers have eaten.

Breast feeding is nature's way of providing food for the newborn. For some mothers it is so easy whereas for some it is a struggle. In Malaysia, the struggle is more pronounced amongst the Chinese especially those who are in the higher professional group. Most often the complaint is 'not enough milk'. Some even blame it on breast sizes, which is utter rubbish because the Chinese women's physique has not changed that much over the decades. If our female ancestors can breast feed successfully, why can't modern Chinese mothers do so? I personally think that it is because we have too many choices and most of us want to take the easy way out instead of trying a bit harder to succeed. Remember that once your baby is suckling properly you will truly enjoy the experience and the wonderful feeling that you are nourishing your baby yourself.

How to succeed?

1. Make up your mind that you definitely want to breast feed
2. Do not feel pressurized into breastfeeding if mentally you do not want to do so as you will never succeed and you will see yourself as a 'failure'
3. Do not say that you will try as it definitely will not work
4. Keep telling yourself that you will succeed and be positive about it
5. Make sure your husband will support you 100%
6. Learn to ignore negative remarks and pressures to bottle feed
7. Remember the benefits of breastfeeding for you and your baby outweighs all the negative remarks
8. If you need to hire a confinement lady, make sure that she is pro breast feeding and can give you a lot of support during the early days
9. Try and register with a local breast feeding group as they can give you the support and encouragement needed to establish and continue breastfeeding

Preparations

Apart from preparing yourself mentally, you need to prepare your nipples by toughening them. Once a day when you are bathing, gently pull the nipples forward and roll them between your thumb and forefinger for a couple of minutes. When you are drying yourself give the nipples a slightly vigorous rub with the towel to strengthen them for when your baby starts sucking. Apply a little cream on them to get them supple. Do not stimulate the areola which is the area just behind the nipple as this could stimulate the production of oxytocin leading to premature labour.

Getting started

The baby should be put to the breast immediately after birth in the labour room itself. Discuss with your attending midwife and doctor about this. As a midwife myself, I get very irritated when a lady comes in with a list of demands even though I am normally very pro mothers' request. My advice is to use a soft approach and you will find your birth attendants will bend over backwards to fulfill your request.

Most babies will start rooting for the breast as soon as they are placed on the mother's chest once the umbilical cord is cut. Make sure that your baby is dried properly before being placed naked on your chest and covered with a dry towel. Your body heat will keep your baby warm so there is no need to wrap baby as this could prevent your baby feeling for you and rooting for your nipple. If your baby is a little sleepy because of drugs given to you during labour, do not worry, just wait for the effects to wear off and baby will be able to suckle.

The key to success is making sure that the baby is LATCHED ON PROPERLY.

This will:
1. Prevent sore nipples
2. Enable baby to suckle properly and get the milk
3. Stimulate the 'let down' process

The first step to a proper latch on is getting baby to open his mouth WIDE! Brush baby's lower lips with your nipple to encourage him to open his mouth.

Once baby's mouth is open wide, quickly pull him onto the breast by pulling the baby toward you with the arm that is holding him. Make sure you move the baby towards you, and not move yourself towards the baby

The baby's gums should completely bypass the nipple and cover approximately one inch of the areola behind the nipple. Make sure the baby's lips are everted. Some baby's will tighten or purse their lips, especially the lower one. If the lower lip is inverted (turned in), gently press down on baby's chin to evert the inwardly turned lip.

Remember to make sure that you are sitting comfortably before you start and that baby is correctly positioned by using pillows to raise him to the level of your breasts. There are several "nursing" pillows on the market that help raise baby to a comfortable height and position. If you are not comfortable and relaxed, your milk will not flow properly. Your baby will feel your tension and start to 'fight' with you or start crying which will increase your tension.

If your baby is latched on and sucking correctly, you should not feel any pain. Sometimes the baby's initial suck may cause a slight stinging pain which quickly subsides as baby continues sucking. If the pain continues or your baby is not sucking correctly, stop and start over again. Break the suction by putting your finger in the side of the baby's mouth between the gums. DO NOT let the baby continue to feed incorrectly, as you can develop painful and damaged nipples, and baby will not be able to get enough milk

Causes of sore nipples

1. Baby is not positioned and latched properly
2. Baby is not suckling properly
3. Both the above causes combined together
4. Fungal infection due to Candida albicans. The pain goes on throughout the feed and may continue even after feeding. This infection may also cause cracked nipples. You need to consult a doctor who will prescribe a fungal cream to apply.

Nipple shields are not recommended for sore nipples, because, although they may help temporarily, they usually do not. They may also cut down the milk supply dramatically, and the baby may become fussy and not gain weight well. Once the baby is used to them, it may be impossible to get the baby back onto the breast. In fact, many women who have tried nipple shields find that they do not help with soreness. Use as a last resort only,

Breast shields may be useful to protect your nipples rubbing on your clothes when you are not feeding and it also collects the milk drips so you do not have to go around with 2 wet patches on your clothes.

Remember to keep telling yourself and your baby that you will succeed and be patient as it may take a couple of days to get started properly.
